Halloween 2010

The whole month of October flew right by, I don't think I even asked my kids what they wanted to be until like a week before Halloween.  I've given myself a challenge to make their costumes every year...mainly for two reasons:  1- because halloween costumes are WAY too expensive and their quality is not that great, and 2- so my kids will always look original and not like anyone else.   It's a good way for me to try and be creative and to spend quality time with my kids.  I don't choose what they're gonna be, they tell me what they want to me and I try to go from there....so far, it's turned out pretty well!!  This year Filimone wanted to be a warewolf.  I was so excited at his choice because I could picture in my mind what he was going to look like.  The hardest part was putting the picture in my mind to reality.  Ova and I actually got really lucky with Mone's costume because we were able to find exactly what we needed really fast and really cheap.  Score!  We went to Joann's fabric, I was hoping to get some faux fur... they has some on a bolt for like $24 a yard.  First of all, I didn't need that much and second that was way too expensive.  As we were walking around the store, we saw these 8X12 peices of fur in the craft aisle.....it was perfect and it was only $1.99 for each peice.  I grabbed 5 pieces, 1 for each of his feet (so it looked like the fur was coming out of the bottom of his pants) 1 for each of his hands (so the fur was coming out of his sleeves) and one on his chest.  He's already got the hair so we didn't need to worry about that.  After Joann's we headed over to the DI to find him a flanel shirt.....we were in and out of there in like 5 minutes with our $2 shirt.  His whole costume was only $12 and it turned out so cute if I do say so myself...hahaha!  The best part of it is that I didn't have to sew anything.  I cut up his shirt and pants and safety pin'd the fur around his feet and arms and onto his inside shirt for his chest hair.  I ratted his hair out with a lot of strong hold hairspray and painted his face....and voila.....here's my little warewolf!!
Makai wanted to be a mummy this year.....another easy costume to make and his was even better because it was F-R-E-E!  I already had a white sheet, and that's all I needed.  I ripped the sheet into like 2 inch strips, that was the easy part.  Trying to figure out how to get it wrapped around him and get it to stay in place was going to be the hard part.  I bought him some white thermals (okay so with those his costume actually cost me $5) and had him put them on.  I tried wrapping him and sewing a stitch every few inches....but that didn't work.  The only parts that stayed in place were where I sewed it and the other parts fell down.  I didn't like how it was looking.  I tried pinning it to his thermals and it was doing the same thing as the sewing.  So then I got a bright idea to use my hot glue gun..... It took forever, but it worked out amazingly!  I glued the strips of the sheet to him while he was wearing his thermals  (don't worry, I didn't burn him....I made sure to pull the thermal away from his skin on the parts that I was gluing....hahaha)  I covered him from head to toe with the sheet, even wrapped around his fingers.  And since it's glued onto the thermals, it can be used again....if Mone wants to be a mummy sometime down the road!  Here's Makai my mummy....

I pictured in my mind making Lautala into a gerber daisy with the petals around her face, her body the stem and her arms the leaves.  Gramma Tea got too excited one day when she went shopping and bought a costume for Lautala.....but it fit her perfectly.....she was a Fat Cow!!  haha

Even though Halloween landed on a Sunday this year, my kids had most of their Halloween festivities on Wednesday.....they were in their costumes from morning to night that day.....and then again for Trick-or-Treating around the neighborhood on Saturday night.   Wednesday morning started with Filimone's preschool Halloween parade....we woke up at like 7 so I could get him all ready and then he headed to school.  His costume was a hit, and he was totally loving all the attention!  They made some cute Halloween crafty projects and paraded around the whole high school showing off their costumes.....it was fun!

Later that day, Ova had his Halloween party at Dannon.  I just love Ova's job and how they go all out for the families, especially the kids of their employees for every holiday!  When you first walk in, they had us sign a release form allowing them to take pictures of our kids...they had a whole display set up with bails of hay and corn stalks and everything....it was so cute!
They had craft tables set up where the kids could make their own little candy corn decoration and decorate their halloween bags.  They got to decorate their own cookies and they had some games set up for the kids.  After playing each game they got a handful of candy or toys....the kids had so much fun!  We were there with all the other Dannon families and their kids so it was extra fun!

We went straight from there to the Kearns 13th Trunk-or-Treat and the kids got to play more games and get tons and tons more candy.  Needless to say, it was a very busy fun-filled day!!
